2012 Home Baseball Games to be played at Homer Stryker Field and Western Michigan University (Updated Jan. 31, 2012)
With construction and renovation of the Kalamazoo College atheltic fields well underway, the Hornet baseball team will play its home games off-site this spring while the new stadium is completed.
Homer Stryker Field will host all but one of the home Kalamazoo College baseball games this spring. The April 29 doubleheader with Trine will be played at Western Michigan University's Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field.
Homer Stryker Field (Info) is located 1.9 miles east of Kalamazoo College and is approximately a seven minute drive from campus. Map/Directions
Robert J. Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field (Info) is located approximately one mile west of Kalamazoo College and is about a five minute drive from campus. Parking is just west of the stadium and adjacent to Ebert Field (Softball). Map/Directions
The Hornets will return to a brand new stadium on campus next spring. The baseball field will feature natural turf with a complete drainage system, new dugouts, bleachers, press box and scoreboard. The entire athletic complex will also feature a new fieldhouse for locker rooms and athletic training facilities along with a new stadium services building that includes new restrooms and a concesion stand.
Eight Hornet Baseball players named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll Eight members of the Kalamazoo College Baseball team were named to the 2011 MIAA Academic Honor Roll: Nick Beam, Rob Briski, Tommy Carion, Will Ferrara, Mark Fortelka, Bobby Hilliard, David Kamerman, and David Oliphant were each recognized for achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher for the entire academic year.
Baseball announces team awards The Kalamazoo College Baseball team announced the recipients of its team awards at a banquet held May 22nd in the Hicks Center: Team MVP: Phil Earls Most Improved Player: Eric Glanz Hornet Hustle Award: Andy Maas Rookie of the Year: John Jakubik
In addition to the team awards, captains for the 2011-12 season were announced: Tim Lynch, Mike McCann, Mike Murray and Eric Glanz.
Baseball falls
in season finale at Adrian The baseball team lost its final two
games of the season 6-4 and 5-2 at #15 Adrian on Saturday,
May 7. Adrian led 5-1 after three innings in the opener,
but Kalamazoo scored three runs in the fourth to make
it a 5-4 game. There was an hour and fifteen minute
delay for lightning in the middle of the fifth before
the Bulldogs added a run and held on for the win. Kalamazoo
had seven hits in the game, including a triple by David
Kamerman. In the second game, Kalamazoo led 2-1 after
four innings, but Adrian scored four runs in the bottom
of the fifth to take the win. Kalamazoo had four hits
in the game, including a double by Eric Glanz. Game

Baseball beats #15
Adrian in extra innings The baseball team defeated Adrian 8-7
in eight innings at Woodworth Field on Friday, May 6.
The win ended Adrian's 16-game winning streak and was
just the second loss for the Bulldogs in MIAA play this
season. Kalamazoo used a five-run second inning to take
a 5-2 lead and led 7-3 going into the seventh inning.
Adrian scored four runs in the top of the seventh to
tie the score and send the game to extra innings. The
Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth
before John Jakubik's single up the middle drove home
the game-winning run. Mike McCann was 3-for-4 with a
double. Drew Ordakowski was 3-for-5. Marc Zughaib had
a double and two RBIs. Tommy Carion pitched six strong
innings, but David Oliphant earned the win in relief.
Adrian won the second game of the doubleheader, 8-3.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead with five runs
in the first inning and the Hornets were never closer
than four runs down. Kalamazoo outhit Adrian 10-7, but
the Hornets made three errors and left 12 runners on
base. David Kamerman, Mike McCann, and Jake Hansen each
had two hits in the game. Kamerman and Hansen each had
a double. The series is scheduled to conclude with a
doubleheader at Adrian on Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m.

Baseball drops doubleheader
to Albion The baseball team lost both games of
a doubleheader to Albion at home on Thursday, May 5,
falling 14-7 in eight innings in the opener and 5-2
in the second game. Kalamazoo led 3-2 going into the
top of the seventh inning in the opener before the Britons
scored five runs to take a 7-3 lead. Kalamazoo came
back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning
to send the game to extra innings. Albion scored seven
runs in the eighth inning, including six unearned, to
pull out the win. Kalamazoo had eight hits in the game.
Mike Murray and Drew Ordakowski each had two hits. Kalamazoo
lost the second game, 5-2. Albion led 1-0 after four
innings before scoring four runs in the top of the fifth.
Kalamazoo scored both of its runs in the bottom of the
fifth. Five players each had a hit for Kalamazoo. David
Kamerman, Mike McCann, and Eric Glanz each had a double.

Baseball takes two
from Holy Cross The baseball team won both games of
a doubleheader against Holy Cross (Ind.) on Tuesday,
May 3rd at Woodworth Field. Holy Cross led 1-0 into
the sixth inning before Kalamazoo tied the score in
the bottom of the inning. The game went to extra innings
before Tim Lynch drove in the game-winning run for the
Hornets with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Dave Oliphant pitched all eight innings for the Hornets
in the 2-1 win. Kalamazoo won the second game, 12-3.
Kalamazoo scored a run in the first and a run in the
fourth, but used back-to-back five run innings in the
second and third to blow the game open. David Kamerman
was 3-for-5. Mike McCann, Mike Murray, and Alex Crook
each had two hits. Murray had four RBIs while Crook
drove in three runs. Phil Earls earned the win with
six strikeouts in six innings on the mound. The Hornets
return to MIAA action with a home doubleheader against

at Alma The baseball team lost both games of
a doubleheader at Alma on Sunday, May 1, losing 25-9
and 17-8. In the opener, Kalamazoo scored three runs
in the first, but trailed 8-3 after the second innings.
Kalamazoo scored six runs in the third to regain the
lead, 9-8, but Alma came back with nine runs in the
bottom half and extended the lead for the win. Kalamazoo
had 10 hits in the game. Jake Hansen and Mike Murray
each had two hits. Eric Glanz and Mickey Amboyan each
had two RBIs. In the second game, Kalamazoo scored a
run in the first, but Alma scored 12 runs in the bottom
of the first to take the big lead. Kalamazoo scored
four in the top of the second, but could not close the
gap over the final innings. Kalamazoo outhit Alma 14-13,
but the Scots took advantage of nine walks while the
Hornets also left nine runners on base. Mike McCann,
Mike Murray, Alex Crook, Tim Lynch and Marc Zughaib
each had two hits. Murray and Drew Ordakowski each had

Hope in extra innings The baseball team lost the first game
of a doubleheader 9-8 in eight innings at Hope on Saturday,
April 30. Kalamazoo led 4-3 after five innings, but
Hope scored five runs in the top of the sixth to take
an 8-4 lead. Kalamazoo battled back with four runs in
the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra
innings. Hope scored one in the top of the eighth and
held on for the win. Kalamazoo had nine hits in the
game. Jake Hansen and Marc Zughaib each had two hits.
Zughaib had two RBIs. Kalamazoo left nine runners on
base while making six errors in the field whch led to

put up six runs in the top of the sixth and another
in the seventh. Kalamazoo left 10 runners on base in

at Hope The baseball team lost both games of
a doubleheader at Hope on Friday, April 29, falling
8-3 and 9-0. Kalamazoo had just two hits in the opener
while making two errors in the field leading to four
unearned runs. Kalamazoo led 1-0 after the first, but
gave up three runs in the second and four in the third.
In the second game, Hope scored a run in the first,
three in the third, four in the fourth, and two in the
sixth. Six different players had a hit for Kalamazoo,
but the Hornets ended up leaving eight runners on base.
The two teams conclude the series at Hope on Saturday,

schedules have been adjusted for Thursday, April 28
due to rain and wet field conditions. The baseball games
at Hope have been postponed to Friday, April 29. The

has been moved to Trine with a new start time of 4:30
today (Thursday).

doubleheader at Albion The baseball team split a doubleheader
at Albion on Saturday, April 23. Kalamazoo lost the
opener, 3-2, before winning the second game, 4-3. Kalamazoo
was up 2-0 in the top of the third in the first game
before Albion scored three runs in the bottom half and
held on for the win. Five different players each had
a hit for Kalamazoo. Mike McCann had a double. In the
second game, Kalamazoo scored three runs in the top
of the fifth, but Albion came back again to tie the
score at 3-3 in the bottom half. Drew Ordakowski drove
in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, and Phil
Earls closed out the bottom half for the complete game
win. Kalamazoo had nine hits in the game. Drew Ordakowski
was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Alex Crook was

Canceled The baseball doubleheader scheduled
for Monday, April 18 against Finlandia has been canceled
due to snow. These games will not be rescheduled. The
Hornets return to action with a doubleheader at Albion
on Friday, April 22 at 2 p.m.
Baseball wins doubleheader
over Finlandia The baseball team won both games of
a home doubleheader with Finlandia on Sunday, April
17, winning 7-4 and 14-2. Kalamazoo trailed 2-0 in the
second before scoring four runs in the bottom of the
inning to take the lead. Kalamazoo had eight hits in
the game. Drew Ordakowski was 2-for-4 with a double
and an RBI. Mike Murray had two RBIs. Matt Beck earned
the win with six strikeouts in four innings of work.
Adam Bortolussi closed out the seventh for the save.
In the second game, Kalamazoo led 2-1 entering the bottom
of the fourth inning before scoring four runs in the
fourth, five in the fifth and three in the sixth. Kalamazoo
had 21 hits in the game. Danny Deutsch finished 5-for-5
with two doubles and five RBIs. David Kamerman, Mike
McCann, Jake Hansen, Eric Glanz, Mike Murray and John
Jakubik each had two hits. Drew Ordakowski earned win,
allowing just four hits in six innings with six strikeouts.

Baseball wins two
at Calvin The baseball team won both games of
a doubleheader at Calvin on Saturday, April 16. Kalamazoo
won the opener, 5-4. After falling behind 3-1 in the
top of the fifth, Kalamazoo scored three in the bottom
half to go up 4-3. The Hornets added a run in the sixth
and held Calvin to one run in the seventh for the win.
Mike Murray was 2-for-3 with an RBI. David Kamerman
had a hit and two RBIs. Tommy Carion earned the win
on the mound in six innings of work. Jake Holloway closed
out the seventh for the save. Kalamazoo scored multiple
runs in four different innings in the 11-3 win in game
two. Jake Hansen had two doubles in the game while scoring
three runs. Eric Glanz had two hits, including a double,
and also scored three runs. John Jakubik had two RBIs.
Caleb Kennedy earned the win on the monund in six innings
of work. Jake Holloway pitched the seventh without allowing
a run. Kalamazoo is now 11-9 overall and 8-6 in the

Calvin on Thursday, April 14. Calvin took a 1-0 lead
in the third inning of the opener. Kalamazoo tied the
score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, but Calvin pushed
the go-ahead run across in the bottom half. John Jakubik
and Eric Glanz each had a double for Kalamazoo. Calvin
scored the only run of the second game in the bottom
of the sixth inning. Each team had five hits. John Jakubik
was 2-for-3 for the Hornets. The series is scheduled

at Olivet The baseball team lost a pair of games
at Olivet on Saturday, April 2. Olivet won the opener,
9-6. Olivet led 7-0 after four innings, but Kalamazoo
battled back with six runs in the top of the fifth to
cut the deficit to one. The Hornets were unable to score
again as Olivet added two runs in the sixth to make
it 9-6. Kalamazoo had seven hits in the game. Jake Hansen
drove in two runs while Mike Murray and Drew Ordakowski
each had a double. Olivet won the second game, 6-3.
After four scoreless innings Olivet scored five runs
in the bottom of the fourth. Kalamazoo scored two in
the fifth, but was unable to get any closer as the Hornets
left 11 runners on base in the game. Kalamazoo had nine
hits in the game. Eric Glanz and Drew Ordakowski each

Baseball takes
two from Olivet The baseball team improved to 4-0 in
the MIAA with a doubleheader sweep of Olivet at Woodworth
Field on Thursday, March 31. Kalamazoo won the opener
3-2 behind a complete game pitching performance by Tommy
Carion who struck out two without walking a batter in
seven innings. Kalamazoo had seven hits in the game,
led by Mickey Amboyan's two hits and an RBI. Kalamazoo
won the second game in dramatic fashion, using a walk-off
double to win 4-3 in eight innings. Kalamazoo had nine
hits in the game while limiting Olivet to just five
hits. Eric Glanz had two hits and two RBIs in the game,
including a double in the eighth inning to drive home
the winning run. Mike Murray and John Jakubik also had
two hits each. Tim Lynch had two RBIs. Caleb Kennedy
did not allow an earned run in six innings of work.
Jake Holloway earned the win in relief. Kalamazoo completes
the series with a doubleheader at Olivet on Saturday,

doubleheader to open conference play The baseball team opened MIAA play with
a doubleheader sweep of Alma at Woodworth Field on Monday,
March 28. Kalamazoo trailed 1-0 after four innings and
did not have a hit before scoring four runs in the fifth
inning and four runs in the sixth inning to win the
opener, 8-1. Kalamazoo finished with eight hits in the
game. Mickey Amboyan and John Jakubik each had two hits.
Jake Hansen and Marc Zughaib each drove in two runs.
Dave Oliphant earned the win on the mound allowing five
hits over seven innings. Kalamazoo won the second game,
3-0. The Hornets scored a run in the first, third and
fifth innings and had seven hits in the game. Jake Hansen
was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Phil Earls allowed just four
hits in the shutout win while striking out four and

and field conditions. Alma is now scheduled to travel

to Chicago The baseball team lost both games of
a doubleheader to the University of Chicago on Tuesday,
March 22, falling 6-2 in the first game and 4-3 in eight
innings in the second game. In the opener, Kalamazoo
tool a 2-0 lead in the second inning before Chicago
scored four runs in the third and two in the fifth.
Kalamazoo had five hits in the game while Chicago had
14 hits. Tim Lynch was 2-for-3 with an RBI. In the second
game, Kalamazoo took a 3-2 lead into the top of the
seventh before the Maroons tied it up to send the game
to extra innings. Chicago scored in the top of the eighth
and held the Hornets scoreless in the bottom half for
the win. Kalamazoo had nine hits while Chicago had eight.
The Hornets left 12 runners on base while Chicago stranded
10. Eric Glanz was 3-for-3. Drew Ordakowski and Jake

doubleheader with Hamilton The baseball team split a doubleheader
with Hamilton College on Saturday, March 19 in Winter
Haven, Fla. In the first game, Kalamazoo defeated Hamilton
15-11 in 10 innings. The score was tied 11-11 after
six innings, and after three scoreless innings, Kalamazoo
scored four runs in the top of the 10th and closed out
the bottom half for the win. The Hornets had 18 hits
in the game and were led by David Kamerman's 5-for-5
effort with six RBIs and three runs scored. Six players
had two hits apiece. Four pitchers threw in the game
with Jack Cleary picking up the win in relief. Hamilton
won the second game, 10-2. The Continentals scored six
runs in the second inning and led 10-2 after three innings.
Neither team scored over the final four innings. The
Hornets had nine hits in the game and left eight runners
on base. David Kamerman and Eric Glanz each had two

against the University of Chicago on Tuesday, March

Baseball wins opening
doubleheader The baseball team won its first two
games of the season, defeating D'Youville College 17-4
and 12-10 in Lake Wales, Fla. on Friday, March 18. The
Hornets fell behind 3-0 in the opener before scoring
multiple runs in each of the next five innings in the
17-4 win. The Hornets had 17 hits in the game, led by
John Jakubik's 4-for-4 effort. Jakubik had two singles,
a double, a triple, scored three runs and had four RBIs.
Mike McCann was 3-for-4. David Kamerman, Mike Murray,
Mickey Amboyan and Tim Lynch each had two hits. David
Oliphant earned the win in four innings of work. Matt
Beck picked up the save by pitching the final three
innings. Kalamazoo went up 5-0 in the second game and
held on for the 12-10 win. Kalamazoo had 12 hits in
the game. David Kamerman and Alex Crook each had three
hits. Phil Earls earned the win while Jake Holloway

2010 team awards The baseball team announced its 2010
team awards on Wednesday, June 2. The four awards are
presented annually and voted on by team members.
Team MVP - Jake Hansen, sophomore first baseman Most Improved Player - Alex Crook, sophomore outfielder Hornet Hustle Award - Brian Barkley, senior outfielder/designated hitter Rookie of the Year - Jake Holloway, freshman pitcher
The team also selected captains for the 2010-11 season: Mike McCann (Jr.), David Oliphant (Sr.), Tim Lynch (Jr.) and Mike Murray (Jr.).
Brandon Luczak receives MIAA's Al Deal Scholar-Athlete Award Kalamazoo College's Brandon Luczak was announced as the 2010 recipient of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Al Deal Scholar-Athlete Award on June 10, 2010.
The award recognizes senior class athletes who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership qualities. The award honors former MIAA commissioner Albert Deal (1971-91). Luczak is the first Kalamazoo College student-athlete to earn the award in its seven year history.
A resident of Rochester Hills and graduate of Rochester High School, Luczak was an outstanding football and baseball player during his four years at Kalamazoo, earning All-MIAA honors three times. In football, he broke every school single-game and seasonal passing record during his senior year, and led all of NCAA Division III in total offense with 381.8 yards per game and passing offense with 366.3 yards per game. He was second in the nation in completions per game (32.2) and fourth in total passing yardage with 3,663 yards. A converted tight end, Luczak set MIAA single game records for attempts (79) and completions (56) in a game against Hope, and twice threw six touchdown passes in a game. He was a second-team All-MIAA selection. He finished his career as Kalamazoo’s career leader in completions with 613 and attempts with 1,058, second in career touchdown passes with 58, and third in career passing yardage (6,884) and total offense (7,176). He finished the 2009 season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, then played in the D3 Football Senior Classic in December before having surgery.
In baseball, Luczak posted a 5-3 record with six complete games in conference play as a freshman, earning Second Team All-MIAA honors. As a sophomore, he batted .324 at the plate while pitching four complete games and earning two saves on the mound, repeating as a Second Team All-MIAA pick. This past spring, he returned from his ACL surgery to contribute to the Hornets on the mound. He also played first base, shortstop and designated hitter on the diamond for Kalamazoo, posting a .276 career batting average.
A chemistry major at Kalamazoo, Luczak will graduate this month Phi Beta Kappa with a 3.879 grade point average, earning MIAA Academic Honor Roll honors all four years. In December, he was named the first team quarterback on the College Division Academic All-America team by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine.
Luczak volunteered for numerous programs, both on and off campus, during his collegiate career. For three years, he was a mentor for the Kalamazoo Big Brothers program. He also was an assistant coach in a youth baseball program in Kalamazoo, was president of the college’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, volunteered for the college admissions office, served as a representative on its Student Health Advisory Board and was a class agent for the college’s annual fund drive. He also worked for the college’s athletic training and athletic facilities departments and was a supplemental instructional leader in the chemistry department.
Brandon Luczak is the son of Stephen and Cynthia Luczak.
