Seven Hornet football players earn All-MIAA honors
Seven members of the Kalamazoo College football team earned All-MIAA honors as announced by the league on Monday, Nov. 14. Nick Jones, Dimeko Price, Adam Cares and Travis Braun were first team selections. Erick Helfmann, Mike Page and Jake Schell were named to the second team.

Nick Jones, a senior from Hopkins (Hopkins HS), was selected as the All-MIAA First Team quarterback. Jones was 200-of-324 passing for 2,255 yards with 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions on the season. He also rushed for 315 yards (35.0 ypg) and six touchdowns. The three-time MIAA Offensive Player of the week led the MIAA in total offense with 227.2 yards per league game. He ranked second in league play with 206.4 passing yards per game.

Dimeko Price, a junior from Battle Creek (Battle Creek Lakeview HS), was selected as an All-MIAA First Team running back. Price earned second team honors at running back last seasn and first team honors as a return specialist. Price led the Hornets this year in rushing yards (846), rushing touchdowns (7), receptions (55), receiving yards (524) and kick return average (22.4). He ranked second in MIAA contests in all purpose yards (164.7 ypg), third in rushing average (82.5) and third in receptions (28).

Adam Cares, a senior from Dexter (Dexter HS), was selected as an All-MIAA First Team defensive lineman. Cares had 29 tackles on the season, including 12 for lost yardage with seven sacks. Cares' season was cut short with an injury during the seventh game of the season. His sack total ranked third in school history and was just two less than the school record (9).

Travis Braun, a junior from Huntington Woods (Berkley HS), was selected as the All-MIAA First Team kicker for the second consecutive year. For the season, Braun was 29-of-34 on extra point attemps and 10-of-14 on field goals. In league play Braun was 13-of-15 on extra points and 5-of-7 on field goals.

Erick Helfmann, a junior from Fowlerville (Fowlerville HS), earned All-MIAA Second Team honors as an offensive lineman for the second consecutive season. Helfmann anchored an offensive line that helped the Hornets finish second in the league in passing offense (213.5 ypg) and fourth in total offense (339.7 ypg).

Mike Page, a senior from Port Huron (Port Huron HS), was selected as an All-MIAA Second Team linebacker for the second consecutive season. Page led the Hornets with 84 total tackles including 6.5 for lost yardage this season. He ranked eighth in MIAA contests with 8.7 tackles per game.

Jake Schell, a senior from Traverse City (St. Francis HS), earned All-MIAA Second Team honors at defensive back. Schell was third on the team in tackles (69) with 7.5 for lost yardage and three interceptions.

Adam Cares selected to Academic All-District Team
Adam Cares was selected to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District VI Football Team on Thursday, Nov. 10. Voted on by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), the team recognizes the top sophomores, junior and seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.3. District VI includes all Division III schools in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Cares is a senior defensive lineman from Dexter, Mich. (Dexter HS) carrying a 3.744 GPA as a business major. Before suffering a season-ending injury during the seventh game, Cares had 29 tackles, including 12 for lost yardage. Despite missing the last three games, Cares led the Hornets and finished second in the MIAA with seven sacks, a figure that also ranks third in school history.

Cares is one of just four players in the MIAA to earn Academic All-District honors this season. As a first-team selection, Cares advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

Football falls 35-21 at Trine in season finale
The football team lost its season finale 35-21 at Trine on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Hornets scored on their opening drive, but ended up trailing 28-14 at halftime. After falling behind 35-14 in the third, Kalamazoo made it 35-21 in the fourth, but the Hornets were unable to get any closer. Nick Jones was 23-of-41 passing for 252 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Dimeko Price rushed for 49 yards and had a team-high 102 receiving yards on nine catches. Nick Jones, Travis Braun earn MIAA Player of the Week honors
Nick Jones and Travis Braun were selected as MIAA Football Players of the Week on Monday, Oct. 31.

Jones, a senior from Hopkins (Hopkins HS), was selected as the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week. Jones accounted for 302 yards total offense and three touchdowns as the Hornets rallied from a 16-3 deficit to defeat Alma, 30-23. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, and added 67 yards rushing on nine carries, including a 27-yard touchdown run that was the game-winning score. Jones is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time this season and in his career.

Braun, a junior from Huntington Woods (Berkley HS), was selected as the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week. Braun kicked field goals of 30, 37 and 34 yards in Kalamazoo’s 30-23 win over Alma. He also converted all three of his extra-point kicks. Braun is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career.

Football wins final home game 30-23
The football team won its final home game of the season, 30-23, over Alma on Friday, Oct. 28. The score was tied, 16-16, at halftime. The score was tied again 23-23 late in the third quarter, but Nick Jones' 27-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds left in the quarter proved to be the game-winner. Alma had a chance to tie or win in the closing seconds, but a pass on 4th-and-6 from the Kalamazoo 21 was intercepted by Adam Powers in the end zone to seal the win for Kalamazoo. Dimeko Price rushed for 150 yards on 22 carries. Nick Jones was 25-of-37 passing for 235 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Jones also rushed for 67 yards and the score. Alex Dietrich had 10 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Colin Leffert had seven catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Travis Braun was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts. Football drops Homecoming contest to Adrian
The football team lost 52-21 to Adrian during the annual Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 22. Adrian led 14-7 after the first quarter, but scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-7 lead into halftime. Nick Jones threw touchdown passes to Colin Leffert (26 yards) and Mikael Lott (27 yards) while passing for 199 total yards. Lott led the receivers with five catches for 76 yards. Dimeko Price scored on a one-yard run while rushing for 106 yards. Mike Page led the defense with eight tackles. More>>

Football falls 14-10 at Olivet
The football team lost 14-10 at Olivet on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kalamazoo took a 10-0 lead into halftime, but the Comets came back with 14 points in the second half. Kalamazoo advanced to the Olivet 24-yardline on its last two possessions, but turned the ball over on downs each time. Dimeko Price rushed for 102 yards and scored on a 60-yard pass from Aaron McGuire. McGuire rushed for 68 yards and was 12-of-28 passing for 162 yards. Alan Mencer led the defense with 11 total tackles, including 2.5 for lost yardage. Mencer, Mike Page and Adam Cares each had a quarterback sack. More>>

Football defeated 22-16 at Hope
The football team lost 22-16 at Hope on Saturday, Oct. 8. Kalamazoo took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, but Hope scored all 22 of its points in the second quarter and took a 22-9 lead into halftime. The Hornets made in 22-16 early in the third quarter, but Hope was able to use up the majority of the clock to hold on for the win. Nick Jones was 11-of-19 passing for 111 yards before leaving the game. Aaron McGuire was 9-of-12 passing for 75 yards with a touchdown pass to Colin Leffert. McGuire also rushed for 63 yards. Leffert had five catches for 73 yards. Travis Braun kicked a 28-yard field goal to give Kalamazoo the 3-0 lead. Alan Mencer scored the Hornets' other touchdown with a fumble recovery in the end zone as a result of Adam Cares' quarterback sack. John Heitchue led the defense with 13 tackles. More>>

Football falls 36-26 to Albion
The football team lost 36-26 to Albion at Waldo Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1. The Hornets led 20-19 at halftime, but fell behind by 16 (36-20) with 5:14 left in the game. Kalamazoo scored with 2:58 left to make it 36-26, but the Britons recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock for the win. Nick Jones was 20-of-35 passing for 235 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Mikael Lott had seven catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Wise had five catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Dimeko Price had 44 yards rushing on 20 carries and 43 yards receiving on five catches. Connor Rzeznik and John Heitchue each had nine tackles on defense. More>>

Nick Jones named MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Nick Jones, a senior from Hopkins (Hopkins HS), earned Player of the Week honors for the second straight week on Monday, Sept. 26. Jones accounted for 422 yards of total offense and six touchdowns in Kalamazoo’s 58-19 rout of Benedictine, Ill. He completed 31 of 36 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns, and added 93 yards rushing on 14 carries and two more touchdowns. Jones is Player of the Week for the second time in his career.

Football defeats Benedictine 58-19
The football team defeated Benedictine University 58-19 at Waldo Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Hornets put up 607 yards of total offense, the third highest total in school history. Nick Jones was 31-of-36 passing for 329 yards with four touchdowns. Jones also rushed for 93 yards with two scores. Dimeko Price rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 99 yards and a score. Mikael Lott, Jimmy Frye, and Alex Dietrich also had receiving touchdowns. Aaron McGuire also rushed for a touchdown. John Heitchue led the defense with eight tackles and a forced fumble. Connor Rzeznik had seven tackles. Adam Cares had three quarterback sacks. Nick Jones named MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Nick Jones, a senior from Hopkins (Hopkins HS), was selected as the MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 19. Jones accounted for 436 yards total offense and four touchdowns in leading the Hornets to a 43-22 victory over Rose-Hulman, Ind. on Saturday, Sept. 17. He completed 26-of-46 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns, and added 56 yards rushing on 10 carries and another touchdown. Jones is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Football wins home opener 43-22 over Rose-Hulman
The football team improved to 2-1 with a 43-22 win over Rose-Hulman in the home opener under the lights at Waldo Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kalamazoo trailed 14-10 early in the second quarter before taking a 20-14 lead into halftime. Kalamazoo put up 23 unanswered points in the second half to take a 43-14 lead midway through the fourth quarter before Rose-Hulman scored in the final three minutes to make the final score 43-22. Nick Jones threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another. Jimmy Frye had seven catches for 135 yards and a score. Mikael Lott and Josh Wise each had receiving touchdowns. Dimeko Price rushed for 97 yards on 20 carries and had another 53 yards on five catches. Travis Braun made three field goals while Adam Powers capped the scoring with an 80-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. Jake Schell led the defense with 10 tackles and an interception. Powers had two interceptions totalling 95 yards in returns. Adam Cares, Trent Judis and Jake Larioza each had quarterback sacks. More>>

Football defeated at Manchester
The football team lost 26-17 at Manchester on Saturday, Sept. 10. Manchester led 13-3 at halftime and made four field goals in the game. Dimeko Price scored twice, one rushing and one receiving, while a Travis Braun field goal completed the scoring for Kalamazoo. Price finished with 46 yards rushing and another 91 yards receiving on 11 catches. Nick Jones was 27-of-43 passing for 258 yards. Jake Schell led the Hornet defense with 11 tackles. Mike Page named MIAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Mike Page was selected as the MIAA Football Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 5. A senior from Port Huron (Port Huron HS), Page led the Kalamazoo defense with 13 tackles in the Hornets’ 39-14 win over Bluffton, Ohio. Eight of Page’s tackles were solo stops, and he also had two quarterback hurries, 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. He is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Football wins 39-14 at Bluffton
The football team won its season opener 39-14 at Bluffton on Saturday, Sept. 3. The Hornets used two early interceptions to take a 12-0 lead. Kalamazoo led 26-0 midway through the third quarter before finishing with the 39-14 victory. Dimeko Price rushed for 89 yards with three touchdowns. Nick Jones was 19-of-30 passing for 256 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Frye. Jones also rushed for two touchdowns. Frye finished with 128 yards receiving on seven catches. Venues set for fall football and soccer home contests
With construction and renovation of the Kalamazoo College atheltic fields well underway, the Hornet football and soccer teams will play their home games off-site this fall.

The football team will play all five of its home games at Western Michigan University's Waldo Stadium. The move to Waldo Stadium prompted some adjustments in the home schedule. The home opener on Sept. 17 against Rose-Hulman is now scheduled for 7 p.m. That game will follow Western's 12 p.m. contest against Central Michigan. The other significant change involves the last home game (vs. Alma) which has been moved to Friday night, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. The three other home Saturday games remain scheduled for 1 p.m. Be sure to view the full football schedule to confirm all dates and times. Additional details regarding admission and parking will be posted closer to the first home game.

The men's and women's soccer teams will play their home games at the Kalamazoo Community Soccer Complex, 901 South Drake Road, Kalamazoo, MI, 49009, approximately four miles west of campus. Weekday start times were unchanged, however all Saturday home games are now scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Please check the men's soccer schedule and women's soccer schedule to confirm all dates and times.

The Hornets will return home to brand new facilities next fall. The football and soccer fields will have artificial turf along with new scoreboards, bleachers, press boxes, and a new fieldhouse for locker rooms and athletic training facilities.

The baseball and softball teams will also play off-site this spring. Details regarding those sites will be posted closer to the season.

2011 Football Season Preview
With solid veterans on both sides of the ball, the 2011 Kalamazoo College football team will continue to challenge and compete as one of the top teams in the MIAA.

“We have some outstanding players on offense, defense, and on special teams,” said fourth-year head coach Jamie Zorbo. “The key for the 2011 season is consistency in all aspects of the game. I’m confident our offense will continue to produce, and my expectations are extremely high on defense.” Full Preview

Travis Braun named NCAA III statistical champion
Travis Braun, a sophomore from Huntington Woods (Berkley HS), was recognized by the NCAA as the statistical leader in Division III for most field goals per game. Braun made 15 field goals in 2010, enough to lead the nation with 1.50 field goals per game. Braun finished the season 15-of-19 on field goals while also connecting on 27-of-27 extra point attempts to lead the Hornets in scoring with 72 points.

Braun was previously recognized as the All-MIAA First Team kicker in 2010. He tied school and MIAA records with four field goals in a game and set an MIAA record with 11 field goals during the conference season.

In addition to Braun's national ranking, sophomore Dimeko Price (Battle Creek/Lakeview HS) finished third in NCAA III in all-purpose yards (198.50) per game.

Cory McCain selected to play for Team Stars & Stripes in Mexico
Kalamazoo College senior wide receiver Cory McCain has been selected to play for Team Stars & Stripes in the annual Division III Senior All-Star football game in Toluca, Mexico on December 18, 2010.

The 2010 Tazón de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) will be played at the Tec de Monterrey Stadium. The United States Stars & Stripes team will face the CONADEIP All-Stars, a Mexican all-star team selected from the newly formed CONADEIP League, a national conference of private schools including the Monterrey Tec campuses. In addition to practicing for the game at the stadium known as La Congeladora, or The Freezer, the traveling group of 44 players, seven coaches and seven support staff will enjoy cultural and educational visits to local attractions such as the Aztec Pyramids of Teotihuacan before facing their Mexican opponents on Saturday, December 18.

McCain, a 6-2, 174 pound senior from Harper Woods, Mich. (Grosse Pointe North HS), led Kalamazoo College with 756 yards on 44 catches in eight games this season (94.5 yards per game). He also led the team with eight touchdowns. McCain set a school record with 19 touchdown receptions in 2009, and also holds the record for career touchdown receptions with 32. McCain is the fourth Kalamazoo player to participate in this annual all-star game formerly known as the Aztec Bowl: Nick Lachapelle, 1999; Brant Haverdink, 2001; Jeremy Vanisacker, 2004.

Five Hornet football players earn All-MIAA honors
Five members of the Kalamazoo College football team earned All-MIAA honors as announced on Tuesday, Nov. 16. Travis Braun and Dimeko Price earned All-MIAA First Team honors. Price also earned second team honors along with Erick Helfmann, Noah Kokoszka, and Mike Page.

Travis Braun, a sophomore from Huntington Woods (Berkley HS), earned All-MIAA First Team honors as a kicker. Braun set an MIAA record while leading the league with 11 field goals in league games this season. He also led the league in field goal percentage (84.6) while making 11-of-13 attempts. In addition, Braun was a perfect 16-for-16 on extra point attempts and led all MIAA kickers with 49 points (8.2 points/game).


Dimeko Price earned All-MIAA First and Second Team honors in 2010.

Dimeko Price, a sophomore from Battle Creek (Lakeview HS), was named All-MIAA First Team as a return specialist and All-MIAA Second Team as a running back. Price averaged 20.4 yards per kick return with 17 attempts in league games this season. He ranked second in the MIAA in all purpose yards with 207.2 yards per game combining yards accumulated by rushing, receiving, and kick returns. As a running back, Price ranked third in the MIAA with 105.7 yards per game with four touchdowns in league play. He also ranked sixth in the league in receptions (4.33 per game). When combining all 10 games this season, Price set a school record with 943 rushing yards.

Mike Page, a junior from Port Huron (Port Huron HS), earned All-MIAA Second Team honors at linebacker. He ranked 12th in the MIAA with 48 total tackles (8.0 tackles/game) and one quarterback sack in league play.

Erick Helfmann and Noah Kokoszka were named All-MIAA Second Team offensive lineman. The duo led an offensive line that helped Kalamazoo rank third in the league in total offense (402.3 yards/game), second in passing offense (261.2 yards/game), and fourth in rushing offense (141.2 yards/game).

Kalamazoo College finished 3-7 overall and tied for fifth in the MIAA with a 2-4 league record.
