TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Kalamazoo College football team suffered
a 41-17 defeat at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday,
Sept. 18. The Hornets trailed 6-0 after the first quarter,
but took a 7-6 lead early in the second. Rose-Hulman responded
with 21 straight points to take a 27-7 lead into halftime.
Kalamazoo scored 10 points early in the third quarter to cut
the deficit to 27-17, but Rose-Hulman scored 14 points in
a span of 3:33 to go up 41-17 and held Kalamazoo scoreless
from there.
Each team turned the ball over with a fumble, although Kalamazoo's
came on Rose-Hulman's one yardline. The Hornets threw four
interceptions while Rose-Hulman did not have any.
Kalamazoo put up 439 yards of total offense (367 pass, 72
rush) to Rose-Hulman's 459 yards (253 pass, 206 rush) and
time of possession was nearly equal. Kalamazoo scored on 3-of-8
red zone possessions while Rose-Hulman converted 3-of-4, but
also scored on plays of 57, 27 and 47 yards.
Kalamazoo's Sam Landry passed for 220 yards and a touchdown
while rushing for 38 yards. Nick Jones passed for 147 yards
and a score. Each quarterback had two interceptions.
Cory McCain had 12 catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns
in his season debut. Aaron Rice had eight catches for 59 yards
and Jimmy Frye pulled in five for 46 yards.
Travis Braun connected on a 22-yard field goal midway through
the third quarter.
Adam Powers had a team-high eight tackles. Adam Cares had
six tackles including two for lost yardage and a sack. Trent
Judis was also credited with a sack.
Kalamazoo is scheduled to play its final non-league game
of the season next week at Benedictine (Ill.) at 6:30 p.m.
