Green Hornet Invitational Sustainability Highlights

The Green Hornet Invitational will reflect the sustainable practices at Kalamazoo College which have been reinforced with the signing of the President’s Climate Commitment in 2007: http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org/
And will reflect the values in the following ways throughout the tournament:

  • No paper programs will be available; rosters and brackets will be on posters in the lobby. Online programs will be available for those who wish to print one off.
  • We will not sell plastic water bottles nor allow them in the gym. Participants will all receive a metal water bottle and tap water will be available throughout the gym during the tournament for participants and fans alike. Fans are asked to bring a water bottle, or they may purchase one in the lobby. The Hornets will be practicing a tap water initiative during the entire season.
  • Our concessions will benefit a local charity in the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission and feature products made locally at “Taste of Heaven” in Downtown Kalamazoo
  • Kalamazoo College sustainability interns will be present to answer questions and educate where appropriate.
  • Saturday morning will feature a tournament breakfast at the College foodservice where participants will hear from the artist who designed and built the trophies and the college sustainability interns. We will also honor Franklin and Anderson who are sharing a bus on the way here.
  • We have commissioned a 2010 Kalamazoo College art major to design and create the championship trophy and all-tournament trophies from recycled materials.
  • There will be incentives for restaurants within walking distance for any tournament attendee who walks to get a meal.
