2010 Women's Tennis Preview
By Jessica Maas '10
With a new coach and only half of last year’s team back, the Kalamazoo College women’s tennis team is working hard to adjust to the changes and be competitive.

“It’s the ground level year for a new program,” said first-year head coach Mark Murphy.

Murphy comes to “K” from Coe College in Iowa, where he spent the last 11 years as the associate head men’s and women’s tennis coach. He was hired over winter break and began work on Jan. 4, and the recent coaching change inevitably means some type of getting-to-know-you phase.

“It’s gone well, it’s gone very well—their transition and mine,” said Murphy.

He inherited five returning players, four of whom were starters last season when the team finished with a 12-9 record and a third place finish in the MIAA Tournament. Beau Wangtrakuldee is the lone senior, and she and junior Kari Larson are serving as this year’s captains. Wangtrakuldee played one singles the last three seasons and one doubles the last two, and Larson played four and five singles last year, as well as two doubles.

Also returning for the Hornets are junior Kate Farwell and sophomores Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman. The team is rounded out with four freshmen, and Murphy considers the makeup of the team to be one of their strengths.

“We have a nice blend of experience and new players, which gives us the right combination of experience and inexperience that comes with excitement,” he said.

He also cited the racquet skill of the women and the team unity as important facets, and believes that they have the ability to be very competitive.

“Our goal this year is to be competitive regionally and nationally, and also for everyone to improve and enjoy each other and the game,” said Murphy. “I think if we prepare correctly and we give our maximum effort we’ll be successful.”

The women’s tennis team opens their 2010 season at Hope against Wheaton College on Feb. 19 at 2:30 p.m. They play their first home match against Grand Valley State on Feb. 26, and will begin MIAA play at Adrian on Mar. 29 at 4 p.m.

Mark Murphy named Women's Tennis Coach
Kalamazoo College announced the hiring of Mark Murphy as head women’s tennis coach and director of tennis facilities on Thursday, Dec. 17.

Murphy comes to Kalamazoo College after 11 years as associate head men’s and women’s tennis coach at his alma mater, Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He has also been the assistant director of Coe’s Clark Racquet Center since 2005.

"We are excited to welcome Mark to the Kalamazoo College community," said Kristen Smith, Kalamazoo College’s Director of Athletics. "He has extensive coaching experience with nationally ranked teams at Coe, he played under and coached with a Kalamazoo College alum, and his experience managing tennis facilities ensures that Stowe Stadium and the Markin Racquet Center will continue to operate as the finest collegiate tennis facilities in the country."

Murphy played and coached at Coe under Eric Rodgers, a 1979 Kalamazoo College graduate and member of two of Coach George Acker’s NCAA III National Championship teams.

In his 11 years as associate head coach at Coe, Murphy helped guide the Kohawks to nine conference team championships (6 men, 3 women), six conference second place finishes (4 men, 2 women), and eight NCAA III Tournament appearances (6 men, 2 women). He has worked with a combined 93 All-Conference selections, 10 ITA/NCAA All-Americans, and eight conference most valuable players.

"I am looking forward to the opportunities at Kalamazoo College," said Murphy. "Kalamazoo has superior academic programs, excellent tennis facilities, and supportive faculty, staff, and alumni. Kalamazoo College has all the necessary components for a national level program."

In addition to his duties at Coe, Murphy has coached at the USTA Competition Training Center in Cedar Rapids, served as chair of the Iowa District Junior Competition, and taught private lessons as a USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) certified instructor. He also was voted as the Most Outstanding Contributor to Junior Tennis in Iowa in 2006.

Murphy graduated from Coe College in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and business administration. He was a three-year letter winner for the Kohawks and member of two Midwest Conference championship teams.

Murphy plans on beginning work in Kalamazoo on Jan. 4, 2010.

"I want to create a fun, challenging, and exciting environment for student-athletes to be successful on and off the court," said Murphy. "We expect to be competitive regionally and nationally."

2009 Season Preview
The senior captains on the women’s tennis team are optimistic and have one goal for the 2009 season.

“We’re going to win MIAA's,” said Becky Thomson.

“This year we’re just going to win it outright,” added Lindsay Zuhlke.

Kalamazoo tied for the league championship in 2007. Last year the Hornets finished 11-11/4-4 MIAA for a fifth-place finish in dual match standings in the conference.

Both Zuhlke and junior co-captain Beau Wangtrakuldee are returning MIAA All-Conference players. Wangtrakuldee was MIAA co-MVP in her freshman season and had a 10-4/3-0 MIAA record last year before suffering a season-ending injury at the GLCA Tournament. She’ll miss the first part of the non-conference season due to study abroad, but will return for the spring break trip fully recovered.

Thomson played mostly three and six singles and three doubles last season.

Second-year Head Coach Sarah Johnston is looking to these players to provide direction for the team.

“The seasoned players on the team are definitely showing a lot of leadership, with years of college matches under their belt, and creating a positive environment for the underclassmen,” she said.

Also returning to the line-up are seniors Smitha Gudipati and Amanda Goumas and junior Kari Larson. Gudipati took last season off but played three-thru-six singles and two and three doubles in her first two seasons. Goumas played five and six singles and three doubles last year and Larson played primarily five singles and three doubles.

The team is also adding three new freshmen players to the mix: Deena Ghazzi, Kelsey Hassevoort, and Paula Silverman.

“The freshmen are definitely contributing to the strength of the team,” said Johnston.

She says that the team is focusing on strength in doubles matches this season because if all the doubles matches can be won, it takes some of the pressure off the singles players.

“We are trying to focus on doubles strategy and play aggressively at the net,” Johnston said. “And minimize unforced errors.”

She, too, believes the team can win the championship.

“We have a really, really tough schedule on spring break, but I feel like it will get us ready to go for an MIAA Championship,” she said. “Calvin, Hope, and Albion are always strong teams in our conference so we will be working our hardest to try to beat those teams.”

Women's Tennis Coach to become full-time position
Kalamazoo College is pleased to announce that the women's tennis coaching position will soon be a full-time position. Current coach, Sarah Johnston, joins the full-time staff in September, and will teach activity/fitness classes as well as taking on administrative duties in addition to her current coaching responsibilities.

Director of Athletics Kristen Smith said, "Sarah did a great job during her first year at the helm of the program. I am confident that she will continue to raise the expectations and competitiveness of the program while becoming an integral member of the Physical Education department and greater Kalamazoo College community."

The new full-time position was created in large part from the recent development of the Tish Loveless Women's Athletics Endowment. In addition, Kalamazoo College is committed to creating an inclusive, student-focused environment, in part by improving the quality of our playing fields and converting more coaching positions from part time to full time.
