2011 Women's Tennis Season Preview
by Grace Walter '14

The Kalamazoo College women’s tennis team takes to the courts with almost as many fresh faces as experienced players this year.

In his first full year as coach of the Hornets, Coach Mark Murphy is prepared to take his five freshmen and seven returners to the top of the MIAA and even to the NCAA tournament.

“We’re all very excited for the upcoming season after finishing third last year,” Murphy said. “We have a difficult pre-season, regional, and conference schedule, I believe that it is the best way to exceed our goals and have a great collegiate tennis experience.”

“We’ll be playing our best tennis by the end of April and we’ll be prepared to compete for the conference title at the MIAA tournament at the end of April,” Murphy added.

In terms of key players, Murphy says that senior captains Kari Larson and Kate Farwell will be vital to our success.

“We’ll lean on our captains, Kari and Kate, for support, leadership, and as major contributors on the court for the 2011 season.”

Senior Kari Larson won 15 singles matches last season and 17 doubles matches, while senior Kate Farwell won 14 singles matches and nine doubles matches.  Other key returning starters include Kelsey Hassevoort and Paula Silverman who will be instrumental to the Hornets’ success.

“By relying on the upperclassmen, we hope to blend experience with youth and exceed our goals with the excitement that the newcomers bring and create unity between players on and off the court.”

The Hornets will be taking their annual spring break trip to Florida and begin their season on February 12th at home against Valparaiso.
